Immanuel Kant's second categorical imperative:
"Act so that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in that of another, always as an end and never as a means."
So that's what I've been doing wrong all these years. I constantly think of myself as a "means" (ie. utility, tool, etc.) It's what I derive purpose from... How can I find purpose solely as an end?
